24 Mar 2012 - Yomenya Goemon and Genki Sushi

Had wanted to have ramen, but there were long queues everywhere, Tampopo, Ippudo... so they ended up at 313@Somerset.

Opted for Gomenya Goemon, since they hadn't tried it before. The display window "hinting" at what they serve.

She got a "half and half" set of vongole and carbonara. Came with soup, and choice of dessert or drink. $20++.

A cup of soup served while waiting for the carbo-treat.

Her set was the first to arrive. The vongole bianco was delicious, with the appetizing aroma of garlic and herb.

The carbonara with egg yolk sitting pretty in the middle looked even more inviting. After mixing in the yolk, it was a richness indescribable. So good the thought of lapping of the gravy crossed mind.

Finally, his cuttlefish ink pasta arrived to made his lips black like he had been poisoned. Doesn't look appetizing? Looks can be deceiving. The sprinkle of tasty dried fish roe was well received, complimenting the already fragrant garlic and olive oil base. This set $16++ came with a drink and a bowl of salad. Which reminds him, the salad also had tasty bits, which he suspects to be dried fish.

Matcha jelly and ice cream for dessert.

Afterwards, she kept nagging about sashimi, something she had done daily for some weeks. Sick.

Went to next door to Genki Sushi, Orchard Central to finish up.

Orders arrived on a rocket.

Could never do without refreshingly cold salmon sashimi $5.80++.

Seared black pepper salmon, $2.30++

Salmon rolls $5.80++. Can't get enough of the flavorsome salmon roe.

Also ordered one botan shrimp sushi each, $5.80++ per shrimp. Flesh looks really smooth, texture was firmer than amaebi and the flesh was also quite sweet.

Came with the head, deep-fried so that you could finish it all up. This one came blind in one eye though. No discount.

Her botan shrimp "reanimated".

There's one last dish of whole sea eel, but the picture's nowhere to be found. Also $5.80++.

That's all, folks.

2 Jan 2012 - First Poly-mates Dinner of 2012

Happy New Year's to one and all. Wishing everyone happiness and good health.

Monday was a holiday, and they all met up for the first gathering in 2012. It was arranged as The House of Robert Timms, Wheelock Place, because one of them worked there.

Another frappe for her, Macadamia Nut. $7.20++.

Mussels for him, $18.50++. Ordered the spicy chilli version, and the sauce was a delectable dip for the accompanying sticks of bread (he would have 3 servings). Mussels were soft and tender, you could "chew" them with your tongue.

One stick had gone missing... oh yes, and a pint of Victoria Bitter for $12++. Forgot about the picture though.

Braised Kangaroo Loin for her, $26.90++. Got it over crocodile meat, as it sounded like a safer bet. Like the fat-less version of beef. She wasn't too used to it though.

Crocodile Casserole for the brave Jinenji. $23.80++. Not too sure what it tasted like, will fill in his comments once he has them.

Bacon and Mushroom Fettucine, $18.50++. Shared by one loving couple. Probably should try sharing food next time, cut down on spending, and cut down on weight gain.

She scrutinized the cake menu...

... and the Oreo Dream Bar had her give in to her sweet tooth. $4.50++.

Chocolate Brownie Stack of one of the wives. $6.90++. Sinfully fudgey.

A treat from one of the ex-classmates. How do you share 5 cakes amongst 14 people...

So many other dishes got left out, he needs to find his passion for photography again. Images had been her responsibility in recent, he only afforded his time to the eat.

24 Sep 2011 - Canele and Best Fries Forever

Supposed to go shopping for his new wallet, since she was not agreeable with those he had found online.

Started the outing with a trip to Canele, she had been nagging that she hadn't tried the macarons yet. It was their first time there, by the way.

Got seated pretty quickly. Didn't expect the menu to be thick, it had more to offer than just sweets.

Monogram on the menu.

He had thought they were there for sweets, but she ended up getting tempted by other pictures in the menu. Here goes.

Carbonara for her, $17++. Topped with poached egg as seen in the picture.

His pick of Crab Duo - $18++. Went aglio olio over tomato (marinara?) sauce, chilli crab was probably on his mind. Lots of delicious crab meat, with a bit of "skeletal" remains. Not too sure if it was the doing of the crab, but the aglio olio was too soupy to his liking.

Then came the "mains"...$2.34++ each. Just the second time he's had macaron, he enjoyed how the light airy shells melted into a sweet sensation in the mouth. Had wanted to buy the promotional box of 16 earlier, but that had already been sold out.

Paid the bill of $59.87 and headed off. Took this picture from the outside of Canele, and this aisle would bring them to more food. At this point of time, she also saw 2 girls holding a large cup of something...

Walked on and tried the Chocolate Oreo Crunch at Chewy Junior, and he was ready to purchase some... but she vetoed.

A little bit further down and she finally spotted what the 2 girls were holding, fries from Best Fries Forever. Looked good and also had some customers queuing, so they got themselves a large cup of the Wild Wild West variant ($5). That's topped with chilli beef sauce (probably just flavouring, no meat had) and cheese. Not too bad, but he'll probably go for some other fast food next time.

06 Mar 2011 - Grandma's Birthday Lunch et al.

Grandma's 84th birthday lunch was held at Gim Tin Grassroots' as usual.

Their table opted for the a la carte buffet, where you can only order once per dish. Around 20 selections, excluding 5 starters. Let's go straight to the pictures...

Smooth and succulent soy sauce chicken, and lean barbecued pork. Could have done with more chicken, his favourite meat.

Then came salad prawns, not as cold as he would have liked. Enjoyed the honeydew and melon chunks though.

Took a photograph of the chinese tea while waiting for the rest of the dishes to be served. The color turned lighter with each refill.

Next to arrive was the fried Soon Hock (Marbled Goby). This was gone in no time, tells you how well-received it was huh.

Steamed Tilapia that still had some redness in the bone, and also had a muddy taste. Didn't really like this one.

Nonya-inspired stuff. Kueh Pieti cup with seafood filling of stir-fried prawns, conpoy and egg white.

There were a whole lot more, but the glutton bug kicked in again. Too engrossed with eating to take pictures.

Later on, they would go to town. Bought his first bottle of vitaminwater from Carrefour. $1.65.

The missus made some noise throughout the trip and got to buy 2 pairs of shoes. Debt dollars added *cash register sound clip*

Felt tired and was about to leave for home when she spotted Ji De Chi (JDC) dessert shop. Thinking about the durian ice shavings had them walking in half-consciously. He wanted to get durian again, but she wanted to try other flavours, and settled for mango ice shaving, $5. This serving here seemed smaller as compared to the one at Liang Seah Street. However, the place is bigger and it's probably a little more comfortable.

Weird sequence, but after their dessert, he wanted to have dinner. She claimed that she didn't want to eat, so he thought of going home for instant noodles (with the current damages in mind). But they still ended up at Pastamania. Small portions coming up...

Mussels and clams for her $9.90, no match for the cream based one from Grill and Pasta at Sembawang Hill Food Centre. Should re-visit some time soon...

Turkey bacon aglio olio for him, $7.60. Not too sure if the garlic wasn't enough, or it was not done well, felt that it lacked the fragrance and spiciness.

Makes him want to buy some spaghetti and try cooking aglio olio next weekend. Or maybe he should just stick to visiting Grill and Pasta...

spaghetti cravings

some stuff from the archives.

no pasta connoiseurs, but they just love spaghetti.

went for very late brunch one particular afternoon. settled for cafe cartel, ordered 2 sets of pork ribs, honey and crispy, and another carbonara. total bill came up to $40+, as usual, his heart bled.

some aglio from the menu - had chunks of mushrooms and chicken. why was it good? because she enjoyed it even when she really dislikes noodles.

his crispy pork ribs - the one on the plate, not the one who's out of focus. came with a small portion of aglio too. though he enjoyed the spaghetti, he felt sick after the 2nd rib. crust was crispy, but the inside was tough and didn't taste right. her honey ribs were okay, though.

on another fine day, after the loud advertisements by pizzahut about their fine pastas, they decided to give it a try. went for lunch at amk pizzahut, and placed orders for spicy chicken pomodoro and turkey bacon carbonara. total bill - $20+

spicy chicken pomodoro - small chunks of chicken thigh and bits of chilli padi for the extra oomph. particularly impressed with the service of the staff, real polite and they welcome people with eye contact, unlike most who would say "hello, welcome" while looking elsewhere.
if there was anything to complain about, it would be that the portion was quite small.

turkey bacon cabonara for her - which she also felt was too small a portion

on yet another day, after having the 1-for-1 ice-cream buffet at swensen's, they decided to have spaghetti (again!) at pastamania plaza singapura, total bill 20+. spicy chicken fusili would be missing because he was too hungry and gobbled it all up without taking a picture first!

here is turkey bacon aglio. impressive for her, because she managed to eat half even though it was cooked with chilli padis. both were yummy, but there was quite a bit of residual oil on the plates.

this post shall not end before minutes of their lunch at v8 cafe, bugis. having got sick of pastas, he decided to have some steak, to which the waitress told him was only 10grams of beef. guess who's the confused one. still in a pasta frenzy, she ordered seafood spaghetti as v8 ran out of cream sauce for the salmon one. total bill - around $30.

seafood spaghetti - one large fleshy mussel, when she thought she would have a few. she didn't enjoy this as much. ask him not, for he didn't get to taste it.

medium well "10gm" black pepper steak. the vegetables on the plate were still crunchy, but he would have preferred to have some salted butter to go with. the steak was .... ..... mind is already trailing off... it's time for bed.

more to come tomorrow, or perhaps, saturday.
