April's Fool 2012

With a $20 voucher in hand and craving for ramen, Daikokuya was marked as the meal stop of the day.

Before even getting to look through the menu, she started bombarding him with all the stuff from office. So he got a plate of sashimi first, more time for her to get all the words out before picking the ramen. Nice looking slices with thick layers of fat, $$8.80++.

Mentai Mayo Gyoza, 6pcs for $6.80++. Not too bad, difficult to go wrong with mentai topping.

His Tokyo Chashu Shoyu Ramen, $15.80. Noodles were smooth and springy, but the meat was a little too dry. Soup was a good dip, but too salty to drink on its own.

Sapporo Miso Ramen for her, $14.90++. Loved how the egg was done, he traded a piece of meat for one of the halves. This was a better broth too.

Came some hot Kikumasamune sake, $14++ for ~180ml. Warmed the stomach and was quite sweet for a dry sake.

After ejecting themselves, she insisted on having dessert at Honeymoon Dessert, just few steps away from Daikokuya. Said that it was well-known in Hong Kong, and just steamrollered in.

Durian pancake, $4.50 for just one. Dissecting it, found that it looked to have more (vanilla) cream, but it tasted really good alright.

The glutton also ordered the mango pomelo sago dessert with bean curd, $6.80++. Plus point was that it wasn't overtly sweet.

24 Mar 2012 - Yomenya Goemon and Genki Sushi

Had wanted to have ramen, but there were long queues everywhere, Tampopo, Ippudo... so they ended up at 313@Somerset.

Opted for Gomenya Goemon, since they hadn't tried it before. The display window "hinting" at what they serve.

She got a "half and half" set of vongole and carbonara. Came with soup, and choice of dessert or drink. $20++.

A cup of soup served while waiting for the carbo-treat.

Her set was the first to arrive. The vongole bianco was delicious, with the appetizing aroma of garlic and herb.

The carbonara with egg yolk sitting pretty in the middle looked even more inviting. After mixing in the yolk, it was a richness indescribable. So good the thought of lapping of the gravy crossed mind.

Finally, his cuttlefish ink pasta arrived to made his lips black like he had been poisoned. Doesn't look appetizing? Looks can be deceiving. The sprinkle of tasty dried fish roe was well received, complimenting the already fragrant garlic and olive oil base. This set $16++ came with a drink and a bowl of salad. Which reminds him, the salad also had tasty bits, which he suspects to be dried fish.

Matcha jelly and ice cream for dessert.

Afterwards, she kept nagging about sashimi, something she had done daily for some weeks. Sick.

Went to next door to Genki Sushi, Orchard Central to finish up.

Orders arrived on a rocket.

Could never do without refreshingly cold salmon sashimi $5.80++.

Seared black pepper salmon, $2.30++

Salmon rolls $5.80++. Can't get enough of the flavorsome salmon roe.

Also ordered one botan shrimp sushi each, $5.80++ per shrimp. Flesh looks really smooth, texture was firmer than amaebi and the flesh was also quite sweet.

Came with the head, deep-fried so that you could finish it all up. This one came blind in one eye though. No discount.

Her botan shrimp "reanimated".

There's one last dish of whole sea eel, but the picture's nowhere to be found. Also $5.80++.

That's all, folks.

18 Mar 2012 - Itacho Sushi

A la carte order of salmon $3.60++, fatty tuna belly $22.50++, swordfish belly $10.50++ and sweet shrimp $9.60++.

Fuji set, $27.50++.

Assorted sushi of the Fuji set.

Smoked duck, $3.00++, very smokey flavor and had a ham-my texture, unlike most dry and rough duck meat.

Salmon lobster roll $7.20++. Hmm what did the health column say about putting cooked food and raw food together? Enjoyed this anyway.

20 Nov 2011 - Dining on Harvest of the Sea at Spices Cafe

Read online about an interesting "Harvest of the Sea" buffet at Concorde Hotel, priced at $48++ per person for a weekend dinner. Coupled with 15% discount for some credit cards, the pull factor just got stronger.

Checked out the inclusive a la carte menu for crabs while waiting for the single serve of lobster halves. He would go on to eat 5 different styles of crabs, cold, chilli, black pepper, steamed and butter.

While the lobsters were taking their time, he drew first blood. The salmon sashimi was really delicious, probably of the better variety. The crab was probably mud crab, claw was good, but the torso piece he had was a little mushy. Nobody can guarantee a perfect crab though.

Next plate was of smooth and juicy oysters. They would have another round of plumper ones later on. Bit into some sand/shell bits, but hey, it's seafood alright.

For the sweet toothed. He would be too stuffed with crabs and miss the fondue.

Her platter of cold seafood. Prawns were fresh and had crunch.

Then came the order of butter crab. Those shreds were probably egg wisps. The dish was very tasty, and was still dripping with butter.

Steamed crab was done with Chinese wine and egg whites, he liked it that the meat was moist and flavorsome. Notice that they were served the torso, but it would be claw-fest later on.

The lobster halves arrived, spicy sambal for him and cheese for her. Spoke to the manager and found out that these were from Indonesia, probably spiny lobsters. They didn't do Maine or Boston lobsters. Nevertheless these were succulent and went well with their toppings and had them wanting for more. Unfortunately, these were single-serve, and would cost ~$29++ each for additional orders.

From eyes of the other half.

Flipped the cleaned out cheese lobster for a mugshot.

Beef rendang, soy chicken, stir fried clams and lamb. Turf after surf for her.

He continued with his seafood feast.

Another shot of the pastry spread, about to be attacked.

Shot of the seafood counter, sporting an intermittent blue glow from under the ice.

She returned with slightly healthier stuff from the salad and cold cut counter.

He too, felt that it was time for some salad... with maybe some salmon sashimi, maybe some chicken, and perhaps also some smoked duck...

Crab and scallop soup, she was starting to engage the brakes...

Or so he thought. She sprung a fruity surprise. Kiwi and strawberries were really sweet, he seldom got any that tasted this sweet from the regular supermarket.

Tried some cheese, and heaped on a few slices of freshly replenished braised sea cucumber that was still steaming. Sneaked in 2 pieces of ebi tempura on the way back to the seat.

Felt that it would have been a wasted trip not to have black pepper crab and chilli crab, so those were placed on the order.

Black pepper crab that warmed the stomach. This time round, they were given 2 or 3 nicely cracked claws, as compared to just 1 in the previous crab dishes. An incident occurred here when he was trying to twist the pincers apart. The swollen meat snapped towards him and dirtied his shirt a little, but his mind was on the claw on the floor. What a waste.

She continued with another round of dessert while he took his time to polish off the crabs.

Was trying to catch his breath from downing the fiery black pepper crabs when the chilli crabs arrived. It was all meaty pincers, probably 4 or 5 of them.

Rotated the serving dish to be sure. No assistance of any sort was rendered to him, and she was laughing at him while he struggled with the claws. The numbers nearly overwhelmed him, but it was he who prevailed in the end. OK, no more mud crabs for a long long time....
