18 September 2010 go go curry grandslam

went to town and stopped by food republic at 313@somerset. settled for go! go! curry grandslam.

they were told that it was for 2, but after ordering, they felt that this fare was easily for 3! they found the curry, pork and chicken too salty... had wanted to try the ramen but this overwhelmed them.

curry favor 7 Feb 2010

read about curry favor online and they had mixed reviews. however, the management had been sincere enough reply and it seems they were quite open to feedbacks, so he thought he would give them a try. at the same time, they could also eat at a new place.

soup and salad

extra spicy curry chicken for him - curry was thick and flavorsome. very enjoyable, with pretty big chunks of meat, though the price tag still pinched.

regular beef curry for her - sweet curry with large cubes of beef, she liked it too, but he preferred his spicy. extra spicy.

total cost $30+, pinch the heart and wallet to love the stomach.

curry chicken 19 Jan 2010

chocolate mooncake - made the night before, ready to eat in the morning. chocolate flavoured skin with chocolate core. this was had in conjunction with some oats, milk and 4 slices of bread stuffed with pork floss. very filling.

came home after a gruelling physical test, washed up the soiled clothes, took his shower while she touched up her dish.

curry chicken - everything was pre-cooked before putting into the curry mixture. potatoes were soft enough, but the chicken bones still had raw blood. spicy curry made him perspire again, had to go into the shower again... tired and sleepy......

curry dinner

came home to see that wife had already cooked the rice and was starting on the curry.

she enthusiastically showed him his special plate of rice, molded in a heart shape.

the rice topped with curry - had potatoes, carry, milk, coconut milk, broccoli, diced chicken, mushroom, definitely not the usual curry, but still enjoyable. great effort.

finally, they sat down to make dessert, "xue mei niang" again. the same processes, with slightly different fillings of kiwi fruit and mango. took them quite a bit of time, but it was quality time spent together.

dinner of curry chicken and pan-fried salmon

he met wife for groceries shopping, who had the intention of making sweet and sour pork, curry chicken and pan-fried salmon. however, they decided to save the frozen pork for tomorrow night.

bought frozen pork, chilled chicken breast, chilled salmon fillet, a can of corn, a can of green peas, curry paste, coconut milk, baguette, caramel-coated popcorn, potatoes, tomatoes, carrots...

washed the salmon and sliced it like he watched on streaming videos, angled knifework. sprinkled olive oil, some salt, white wine and some cumin seeds to marinate the salmon slices. meanwhile, she sat by the side and ate chicken wings. grr.

next up was the chicken breast, smashed it up with the back of the knife before slicing them into small chunks. for this, only olive oil and salt were used for marination. this time, she finally got up to do some work, heated oil in the skillet to pan-fry the salmon slices. while she was at it, he peeled and chopped the carrots, potatoes, tomatoes and chilli padi.

things moved fast enough and she started oiling the heated wok in an attempt to fry the chicken golden brown. she, however, forgot the all important garlic. this was realised only after she starting putting the chopped vegetables in with the chicken. he immediately crushed some washed garlic and threw them in. water was then added to the wok and brought to a boil before throwing in the curry paste and coconut milk. mixed them well and left on medium heat. turned down the flame after the curry started boiling again. left on for another 10 minutes or so before turning off the flame.

and here comes the long awaited output

panfried salmon - meat within still tasted smooth and juicy (oily), fell apart easily in the mouth. mm.... but perhaps too much cumin seeds, the spice was a bit too overpowering for him.

chicken curry - as usual, the small cuts of vegetables cooked fast enough to become soft. curry was however not spicy enough, which couldn't have been the case since wife wasn't able to take food that are too spicy. chicken didn't have much time to soak up the curry, maybe it should have been chopped into smaller chunks.

friday dinner at ajitei

he met up with her at orchard to check out the "4 day 16th anniversary special" for simmons mattress at takashimaya. apparently, the $800 for simmons backcare ultimate 300 reflected "savings", instead of the special price. what a misleading advertisement splashed in straits times.

anyway, they went down to ajitei at basement level 2 for dinner. again, it was the recommendation of ws.

got seated, and after some deliberation, ordered curry rice, unagi small don, tontoro, tofu mentai. she had chargeable green tea ($1) while he settled for iced water.

the food came in small portions, but they were generally satisfied.

his curry rice - melted cheese on top of rice and some diced chicken. chicken was well marinated, and the cheese was thick. cheese with curry, an enjoyable combination. $4.80

unagi small don - served with cold sushi rice. not named small for nothing. unagi's skin was crispy and the meat fell apart nicely in the mouth. $5.80

tontoro - the slices turned out thinner and smaller that they thought. however, this didn't make them feel sick after eating, unlike the one from a take-and-go yakitori shop. however, maybe he should have bought some shabu shabu from ntuc and made his own. much cheaper. $7.80

tofu mentai - ws kept talking about it, so much so that he could hear it ringing at the back of his head. not the first time that they liked ws' recommendation. melted cheese ontop of fish roe and tofu. she, the difficult one, commented that it tasted good. it must be really good then, for someone who hates tofu to enjoy this dish. $4.80

at least, this meal washed down the disappointment that came with the misleadingly advertised simmons mattress.

he nearly forgot, the total damage : $28.48 after all other charges.
